Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an Orthodontist and a Dentist?
An Orthodontist is a dentist who undertakes postgraduate specialist training in a university to become an expert in “correctly aligning teeth, bites, and jaws”, according to Healthdirect Australia.1 So, if you have an issue like crowded teeth, talk to us about how we might be able to straighten your smile! If you’re interested in this type of treatment, reach out to us today about orthodontics for Townsville families and our neighbouring communities.
Do I need a referral to see your Townsville Orthodontist?
We are happy to accept referrals. Ask your Dentist about a referral, and then reach out to our clinic to organise a consultation when it’s convenient for you. That being said, you don’t necessarily need a referral to book an appointment with us.
What types of orthodontic treatment are available in 1300SMILES North Shore?
At 1300SMILES, your suitability will be assessed for a number of different orthodontic treatments when you come in for your appointment. Your clinical team will answer any questions you have and outline all your treatment options, which might include:
- clear aligners (e.g. Invisalign)
- growth modification treatments in children.
Does 1300SMILES North Shore offer orthodontic work for patients of all ages?
Children’s mouths, jaws and teeth continue to develop as they mature. As such, their suitability for specific treatments may differ from what is available for adults.
Orthodontics Australia recommends that children between the ages of 8 and 10 visit a registered specialist orthodontist for assessment. They also state you should consider a consultation if your child exhibits any of these behaviours:2
- Early loss of baby teeth (before 5 years old)
- Your child’s teeth do not meet properly when biting
- Mouth breathing and/or snoring
- Crowded front teeth (generally hard to see until they’re about 7 or 8 years old)
- Protruding front teeth
- Biting or chewing difficulties
- Speech impediment
- If your child’s jaw shifts when they open or close their mouth
- If your child is older than five years and still sucks a thumb or finger.

Meet Our Orthodontic Specialist in Townsville: Dr Julia Dando
BDS(Wales), FDSRCS(Edin), MMedSci, MOrthRCS(Eng), MRACDS
Julia is originally from the UK and studied dentistry in Cardiff. She initially worked as a General Dentist in Private Practice in Swansea and later as a Senior House Officer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery within several hospitals in Wales. These jobs gave her wide-ranging dental experience before her postgraduate specialist training in Orthodontics through the University of Sheffield and the Royal College of Surgeons in England.
Julia moved to Sydney in 2000 and started work as an Orthodontist at Westmead Hospital; in this role, she gained a lot of experience working with children and young adults with more complex needs due to medical or behavioural considerations. After a few years, Julia transferred to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, where she became the lead Orthodontist on the cleft lip and palate and craniofacial team.
In addition to her hospital roles, Julia has worked part-time in a private orthodontic practice in Western Sydney since 2005, where she was involved in adopting and applying new digital technologies in orthodontics.
Julia has been an active member of the Australian Society of Orthodontists, serving as State Secretary in NSW for several years and is a full member of the Australian Dental Association, Australasian Cleft Lip and Palate Association and World Federation of Orthodontists.
After visiting regularly since 2018, Julia decided to make the move permanently and is now enjoying the North Queensland lifestyle as a Townsville Orthodontic Specialist in 1300SMILES North Shore.
She has recently started sailing as part of a regular crew and likes to explore the area in her 4WD and camping. She has a cute mini labradoodle called Bommie, and he loves to walk along the Strand with her every day. She loves watching the Cowboys and supports them wholeheartedly (unless they are playing South Sydney Rabbitohs)!
Julia loves her job and takes great pleasure in watching confidence grow in all her patients as they progress through their treatment. This North Shore orthodontist looks forward to meeting you soon!
