Root canal therapy in Waterloo
When you have an infection that reaches to the centre of your tooth, undergoing a root canal may be the only way to put the problem right and avoid extraction. This is a common dental procedure and it is not painful. We’ll numb the area surrounding your tooth adequately and ensure you feel comfortable from start to finish.
Signs you may need a root canal
Inside each of your teeth there is pulp. When that pulp becomes infected, there’s a risk that it will damage the nerve. Over time, this can result in the tooth dying and the need to remove it.
In addition to having a toothache, you might experience signs that are unique to pulp infections. They include:
- Pain when you’re chewing
- Pain when you eat or drink something that’s hot or cold
- A tooth that loosens
You might find that your symptoms appear and then disappear, which may lull you into a false sense of security. When the symptoms reappear, it’s a sign that your infection has spread through your root canal system. You may also notice the following:
- Gum or facial swelling
- Pain that’s constant and sharp
- A tooth that darkens
- Pus oozing from the area
Unfortunately, antibiotics alone won’t treat this particular type of infection. You’ll need to come to us for a root canal. Our Waterloo dentists are adept at screening for, and treating, pulp infections.
Root canal treatments by Waterloo dentists
Your root canal treatment will take place over two or more appointments. We’ll take an x-ray of your tooth to use as guidance. From there, we’ll numb your tooth and then remove the infection from the inside. If you have an abscess, we may need to drain that too. Over several appointments we’ll widen the root canal and gradually treat it. After the work is done, we can seal and fix your tooth.
