By now I’m sure you have seen at least one YouTube or Tick Tock video on how to whiten your teeth at home. But have you ever wondered what damage could potentially be done to your teeth and gums?

Well, we have investigated two of the most popular at-home teeth whitening methods found on YouTube and broken them down below.

#1: Activated Charcoal

We have all seen at least one YouTube or Instagram influencer with a black smile promoting activated charcoal!

It is true the activated charcoal method has proven circumstances in where it has whitened teeth, however, is known to be abrasive to teeth enamel and gums. If used frequently tooth enamel will be worn down slowly over time which can lead to teeth chipping, fragmenting and not to mention gum irritation.

Some cases due to the abrasiveness of the method have left gums a different shade, rather than natural pink they are more of a red which gives the illusion of whiter teeth.

#2: Baking soda and lemon juice

Baking soda and lemon juice is another at-home bleaching agent that has proven whitening results. The method is sound and can in circumstances work but also has drawbacks. Similarly, to the Activated Charcoal if used too frequently the highly acidic lemon juice can eat away at the enamel on the teeth. Over time, this stripping back of enamel can cause the tooth to deteriorate chip or fragment.


In summary, it is important that when you find an at-home teeth whitening method to look below the surface of the results presented. Though the at-home methods may work, it is always vital you consult your Dentist beforehand.
