OLD-fashioned virtues of keeping costs and borrowings to a minimum and aligning the interests of management with those of shareholders are paying off for Townsville-based listed dental management company 1300SMILES Ltd.

The company's managing director, Dr Daryl Holmes, told a Townsville Chamber of Commerce luncheon it was these kind of "old-fashioned principles" which helped the business become one of the best performing companies on the Australian Securities Exchange since its listing in 2005.

"Our dividends have now repaid our initial investors," he said.

The company listed at a price of 80c a share and dividends since 2005 now grossed more than 80c.

Meanwhile, with its share price now around $3.50, its share value had more than quadrupled, providing returns well above the market's average overall gain of 14 per cent.

The company has a market capitalisation of about $70 million. 1300SMILES Ltd, which operates 21 multi-dentist facilities in Queensland and NSW, had its beginnings in Townsville where Dr Holmes established Townsville Family Dental.

Dr Holmes said the objective of listing, rather than the usual aim of raising capital, had been to raise the profile of the company and bring it to the attention of dentists around Australia.

Dr Holmes said he had been able to maintain the company's head office in Townsville and looked ahead with great optimism to the company's continued growth.

One of the benefits about operating in a regional area had been the greater demand for its services.

There was a shortage of dentists in regional areas and an over-supply in metropolitan areas.
