1300SMILES Limited principally provides the use of dental surgeries and practice management and other services to self employed dentists who carry on their own dental practices. 1300SMILES Limited provides surgery facilities at six locations in Townsville along with practices in Cairns, Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and has its head administrative office in Townsville.
The services provided by 1300SMILES Limited allow the Dentists to focus on the delivery of dental services rather than on the administrative aspects of carrying on their businesses. The Dentists pay fees to 1300SMILES Limited for the provision of these services under a dental service agreement with 1300SMILES Limited.
The Dentists who use 1300SMILES Limited's services range from new graduates to experienced professionals in their 40s to senior figures in the north Queensland dental community. Several Dentists who use 1300SMILES Limited's services have special interest and experience in such areas as endodontics, oral surgery, and periodontics and cross refer work to other Dentists who use 1300SMILES Limited's services.
In addition to being a service provider, 1300SMILES Limited also itself provides dentistry services to patients and currently employs three dentists in its dentistry business.
A rule of thumb in the industry is that to meet properly the need for dental services, there should be one dentist for every 3,000 head of population. A catchment area comprising the contiguous local council areas of Townsville and Thuringowa and its surrounds has a combined population of over 130,000 people. On the basis of the industry rule of thumb, this catchment area would need to be serviced by around 43 dentists. The Directors believe that the number of dentists practising in this area is significantly less than that figure and, accordingly, there is a present unmet demand for dental services in the greater Townsville area, being 1300SMILES Limited's main established market.
Accordingly, the Directors believe that there are good prospects for growth of 1300SMILES Limited's business in the greater Townsville area alone due to an undersupply of qualified dentists. 1300SMILES Limited presently aims to grow by:
- helping to grow the revenues of the individual dental practices of its existing Dentist clients;
- attracting new Dentists to use the services available at 1300SMILES Limited's established facilities; and
- expanding the provision of its services into other new geographic areas.
1300SMILES Limited plans to achieve its strategy in two main ways:
- By encouraging new graduate dentists to join 1300SMILES Limited's operations. 1300SMILES Limited offers scholarships at each of the Universities in Australia which grant dentistry degrees.
- By attracting mid-career dentists aged in their 30s and 40s and senior dentists who are within three to five years of retirement to use 1300SMILES Limited's services and, by doing so, reduce their day to day administrative burden of running their own practices, letting them focus on service delivery.
1300SMILES Limited may in the future also consider the acquisition of new dental practices but the primary focus in the near term will be its organic growth strategy.
The key challenges for 1300SMILES Limited therefore are:
- to retain its existing Dentist clients;
- to assist its existing Dentist clients to increase their turnover and profit; and
- to encourage appropriately qualified dentists to operate their practices using 1300SMILES Limited's facilities and services.
1300SMILES Limited believes that its ability to meet these challenges will be critical to achieving growth and so places great emphasis on this aspect of the business.

Robert F. (Bob) Jones, Director and Chairman
Mr. Robert F. (Bob) Jones has been a director and chairman of the Mater Misericordiae Hospital Townsville Ltd since 2000. The company owns and operates two fully accredited private hospitals in Townsville, the Mater Hospital (Pimlico) and the recently acquired Mater Hospital (Hyde Park). The latter was formerly part of the Wesley group; it is presently being reconfigured to become the Mater Womens' and Childrens' Hospital. The Mater Hospitals provide acute medical/surgical facilities with a present combined capacity of 223 beds and 14 private medical suites. Redevelopment and expansion at both sites are ongoing.
The Mater Hospitals employ a total of 700 staff and the various facilities are used by more than 150 specialist practitioners. Mr. Jones sits on a number of committees that oversee the operation and governance of the company's hospitals. He is currently the chairman of both the Remuneration Committee and of the TQM and Compliance Committee.
Mr Jones is also a long-serving director of Hermit Park Bus Service Pty Ltd, one of Queensland's largest providers of school based transport under contracts with the Queensland Department of Transport. The company also has extensive coach charter operations. Mr. Jones has been a member of numerous state government transport advisory committees.
Mr. Jones is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport.
Daryl Shane Holmes, Managing Director
Dr. Holmes is the founder of 1300SMILES Limited and a qualified dentist having obtained his dental qualifications (BDSc (honours)) at Queensland University in 1987. During the last two years of his five year degree he accepted a scholarship from the Royal Australian Air Force.
Upon completion of his degree he practiced dentistry as an RAAF Dental Officer. Upon discharge from the RAAF in 1991 he began private dental practice in Ayr and Home Hill, north Queensland later that year. Since that time he has operated dental surgeries in the Burdekin region, Townsville, and Cairns.
Dr. Holmes has extensive experience in operating dental practices and an intimate knowledge of the management, administrative and other support services required in a dental practice. He has been instrumental in establishing the support network and suite of services that 1300SMILES Limited currently provides to its Dentist customers.
William (Bill) Bass, Non Executive Director
Mr Bass has considerable corporate and listed company experience. He brings extensive commercial and financial management experience from a range of leading Australian and international public companies including General Electric, Billabong, Country Road and OnCard International.
Mr Bass has a Bachelor of Economics, is an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Taxation Institute of Australia.
